When roads are rebuilt around town, the City stockpiles asphalt street grindings for re-use on future projects. For the past four years, the City has saved money on state-funded road improvement project by taking the old road materials and recycling them for future use.
The Street Department maintains over 50 gravel alleys and roads throughout the City. Over the past several years Street Department staff has rebuilt and regraded several alleys and roads using recycled asphalt grindings instead of gravel. Asphalt grindings bind together better than gravel, reducing the formation of potholes and thereby reducing maintenance costs.
Recycling keeps materials out of our landfills and has reduced the amount of new crushed rock needed to maintain gravel roads and alleys around the City.
