Letter from Mayor Kartak

Steve Schuller

Please read Mayor Kartak's letter to Council announcing Mr. Schuller as his choice for the position of Snohomish City Administrator.

Subject: I have appointed Steve Schuller as Snohomish City Administrator

Snohomish City Council,

It’s a real pleasure to announce the appointment of Mr. Steve Schuller as my choice for the position of Snohomish City Administrator.

I want to first thank Human Resources Manager, Pat Adams, for all her work in helping to facilitate such a careful and thorough process for reaching out to find the very best person for the job –this among multiple candidates with impressive qualifications.

A small, in-house team narrowed the list of 22 applicants down to a handful. Then a larger panel (which included community input) sat through all of the interviews and deliberated afterward. Weighing out their insight, thoughts, and concerns, I determined my preference. Next, I reached out for further discussion (thoughts, concerns) with Department Directors and those managers who have worked directly below Steve for years. Yesterday afternoon, I let Mr. Schuller know the good news.

I have worked closely with Steve since his appointment as Interim City Administrator (last November) and have come to know him as a strong problem solver. He’s been described by an upper-level manager as someone who regularly “gets stuck things moving”. It hasn’t escaped me that he’s respected by staff, loved by the community, and embraced by those of you on Council.

Most importantly, his wealth of knowledge, content of character, enthusiastic personality, and proactive leadership style all mix well with my nature. With an intimate understanding of this City’s inner workings and regional matters, Steve demonstrates the acute ability (and eager excitement) to fulfill my need for information and understanding of complex issues that affect our town. In other words, he makes possible and greatly amplifies my ability to execute City Council decisions and effectively lead as this community’s representative-voice at City Hall.

It’s my hope that you will accept this appointment, and I will be eagerly awaiting your decision at an upcoming Council Meeting very soon.
