City to Break Ground on New Accessible Playground

Averill Field Park Playground

City leaders, representatives from community groups, and members of the Averill family will break ground on a new inclusive and accessible playground at Averill Field September 27 at 10 a.m.

SNOHOMISH, Wash. – City leaders, representatives from community groups, and members of the Averill family will break ground on a new inclusive and accessible playground at Averill Field (403 Third Street) on Wednesday, September 27 at 10 a.m. The new playground will be designed to be suitable for all ages and abilities and includes ADA-compliant turf surfaces, sidewalks, and seating.

This is Phase 1 of several long-term projects to improve Averill Field and includes the removal of existing playground equipment and installation of new stormwater detention and treatment system. New site lighting, landscaping, irrigation, and signage will also be installed.

While the project was initially planned for earlier this year, the City chose to delay the construction window so that the playground remained open through the summer months. This ensured that the Boys & Girls Club still had access to the playground for their summer program, as well as allowing City crews to focus on needed repairs at Pilchuck Park. The new Averill Field Playground is expected to be completed this winter.

The field is named after Snohomish native and major league baseball hall of famer Earl Averill. He was named to six All-Star teams during his career (1929-1941) and elected to the Hall of Fame in 1975.

The total authorized budget by the Snohomish City Council for Phase 1 is $1,707,498. The general contractor is Langsholt Contracting, Inc. and the playground equipment contractor is Great Western Recreation.

Thank you to Snohomish County & Councilmember Sam Low, the Snohomish Kiwanis, Snohomish community partners, and the Snohomish Parks and Forestry Board for making this project possible.
