First Street Planter Art

In the fall of 2023, the City installed five temporary planters along First Street. A sixth will be added should the street tree at the corner of First Street and Avenue C be removed. The planters will be in place until new street trees (identified by the upcoming First Street Master Plan) have been planted.

To beautify these installations, the City is engaging with local artists to paint exterior artwork on the planters. The theme of this project is "bringing the Snohomish community together." Artists were selected in March and will begin painting in April and May.

Artist: Jeff Vileta

"As a community organizer, one things that I love to see is community involvement and people showing up to be a part.  This planter is named Raise Your Hand, built on the premise as the mural down the riverfront trail, we believe much in the way of involvement.  Much in the way it takes a village to raise a child, it takes involvement to make a community great and we encourage everyone to lend their talent to help make Snohomish great."

Artist: Kendall Clouser

Kendall Clouser is a self-taught artist based in Snohomish and full-time college student. They love trying all kinds of artistic mediums and crafts, including embroidery, digital art, painting, sculpting, and more. Their artwork for the planter box will include important spaces where community gathers in Snohomish as well as people in those spaces. Artist: Laurie Olsen

"I am passionate about inspiring others to create and appreciate art.  I have been painting murals for thirty years, and my style, like my life, is eclectic and colorful, often expressing my sense of humor and appreciation for all that surrounds me.  

After completing my BFA in Minnesota, I headed straight to Alaska, where I met my husband, a commercial fisherman.  We eventually settled with our four children in Snohomish, an area we love for its beautiful farmland, gorgeous old buildings, and small-town sense of community."

Artist: Emma Fontenot

Emma Fontenot is a member of the Class of 2024 at Snohomish High School. She loves making art and experimenting with different mediums, but her favorites are sculpture and fiber arts. Emma enjoys acting on stage with the SHS Theatre Club, and she is also the president and founder of the SHS Yarn Club. Outside of school she plays roller derby with the Mob City Misfits. Her design includes postage stamps with different iconic Snohomish symbols on them, including street signs, historic buildings and landmarks, and local flora and fauna.

Artist: Jennifer Oak

"This is a simple, yet vibrant design I created in tribute to the Bubble Truck. I miss the magic and connection the bubbles brought to the community. It was something special for us all to enjoy.

I'm a process focused artist creating vibrant abstract work to connect with people at an emotional level. My studio, stilig studio, is located in historic downtown Snohomish, where I work full-time as an artist and offer process-focused art sessions."
